Research

At The Davies Institute, our research explores the deep and fast-paced changes brought about by artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Technology is rewriting the rules of work.

Our role is to decode what’s changing, discover what works, and design what’s next. We investigate economic impacts coupled with the lived experience of technological transformations, helping leaders respond effectively and inclusively.

Core research strands

1.

Skills

Building the capabilities people and employers need to thrive in a technology-driven economy.

Work Transitions & Reskilling

We design evidence-based strategies for lifelong learning, targeted upskilling, and mobility pathways that help workers adapt and advance through disruption. From modular credentials to AI-enabled guidance, we focus on transitions that deliver real opportunity.

Resource Management

Organisations need agile strategies to allocate their time, talent, and technology. We develop operating models for cross-functional collaboration, dynamic workforce planning, and responsible adoption of AI tools so capability becomes a scalable advantage.

Signals to Systems

We translate skills taxonomies, labour-market signals, and sectoral insights into practical roadmaps leaders can use to future-proof teams and regions, giving them the skills they need to leverage the future-of-work.

2.

Systems

Harnessing technology with governance that earns trust and delivers impact.

Artificial Intelligence & Automation

We analyse how AI reshapes roles, processes, and value creation. Taking care to identify where augmentation beats automation, and how organisations can protect human agency alongside productivity gains rather than in spite of them.

Policy & Governance

We collaborate with organisations to craft frameworks that balance innovation with worker protection and social cohesion, including guidance on data rights, algorithmic accountability, platform work, and fair reward systems.

Proof to Practice

In collaboration with other intelligent minds and institutions, we convene pilots and publish playbooks that convert promising ideas into repeatable, real-world solutions.

3.

Society

Ensuring transformation is inclusive, sustainable, and shared.

Inclusive Innovation

Technology must expand our opportunities, not concentrate it. We centre accessibility, equity, and representation in all outputs, supporting employers and policymakers to design work where everyone can participate and progress.

Environmental & Sustainability Factors

The green transition is a work transition. We identify emerging green jobs, map skill demands and showcase climate-positive work models from remote and hybrid practices to sustainable supply chains.

Place-Based Progress

Communities matter. We partner with regional networks and co-host events to co-create local strategies that translate national and EU ambitions into tangible outcomes for cities, towns, and people.
